Auto Numbering
Numbers, renumbers, and tags Revit elements in the order you choose — by
row, grid, curve, or hand-picking — with a full preview before anything
changes in your model.
How to use
Open Auto Numbering from Revit with your project open, then open the
plan, section, elevation, or schedule you want to number from.
Under Scope, choose what gets numbered: everything visible in the
active view or schedule, the current Revit selection, elements you
pick one by one, or the whole model. Narrow it down by category,
level, family, type, or a parameter condition.
Choose the numbering order — along rows or columns, clockwise or
counter-clockwise around the plan, along curves you have drawn, by
nearest grid, in the order you picked, or in creation order.
Pick the parameter to fill, such as Mark, then set how the numbers
look: start value, step, padding, prefix, and suffix.
Decide how groups and existing values are treated — restart the count
per group, keep or replace current values, skip duplicates or fill
gaps.
Click Preview to see every proposed number before the model is
touched. Click a row to find that element in Revit, use Color
order to see the sequence on screen, and review any conflicts.
Click Apply. The whole run lands as a single step you can undo in
Revit.
Good to know
Numbers can weave in live values from the model — grid location,
level, room or space, category, family, type, or any parameter — so a
door near grid A-4 can come out as A-4-01 automatically.
Sequences can be plain (1, 2, 3), padded (001), fractional, negative,
lettered (A, B, C), or follow a custom alphabet of your own.
Parameters & tags can create a fresh text parameter for your
numbers (for example AN_Number), fill a parameter with each
element's permanent Revit identity code for coordination, and place
tags that display the numbers — generating a tag family automatically
where your Revit version allows it, or using a compatible tag type you
already have.
Preview is read-only, duplicates and conflicts are flagged before you
apply, and preview colors are cleaned up with one click.
Save named configurations of your numbering rules, export them to a
settings file to share with your team, and your last-used settings
come back automatically next time.
Trying a new office standard? Run it on a copy or detached model
first — nothing is written until you click Apply, and every applied
run is one Revit Undo step.
