BimCode Family Design

Start your next Revit family with a brief.

Describe the family you need, its dimensions and how it should behave. BimCode Family Design helps you develop the geometry and parameters, refine the definition and apply the result in Revit.

Give the family a clear purpose

A useful family brief includes its category, placement requirements, main dimensions and the variations you need. For MEP equipment, describe the connections as well as the body. For furniture, explain the overall shape, clearances and sizes that matter to your project.

The interactive examples on the overview let you explore connected MEP equipment, furniture and other family concepts. They illustrate the family design workflow; the final geometry and behavior must be checked in Revit.

Define what should change when a parameter changes

A parameter name alone does not make geometry parametric. Family Design can connect parameters to dimensions and reference planes so supported geometry follows them. Revit formulas can relate values to each other.

Other values are used when the family is generated and need a rebuild to change its geometry. Be explicit about which dimensions must flex after creation, then test those dimensions across the range your team intends to use.

Develop a native Revit result

Family Design generates into a Revit family document. Its workflow includes checks on the definition and native authoring validation in supported clients. It asks for confirmation before replacing existing family content.

Inspect the family in Revit: geometry, category, materials, placement and the behavior of its parameters. For connected equipment, include connector locations and settings in that review. A visual preview is useful for design discussion; those native checks establish how the family behaves in your project.

Refine one family at a time

Start with the essential geometry and a small set of clearly defined parameters. Use follow-up requests to refine the design and check the result at each stage. This makes it easier to see whether a change improved the family or introduced a constraint conflict.

A practical first step

How to start

  1. Describe the family

Specify the category, dimensions, materials, placement and any connectors or parameter behavior you need.

  2. Refine the definition

Review the proposed form and parameters. Clarify which values should drive geometry in Revit and which are generation inputs.

  3. Apply and check in Revit

Inspect the generated family, flex the required dimensions and test its placement and connections before using it in the project.

Questions and answers

Know what to expect.

Can BimCode generate Revit families with AI?
Yes. Family Design takes a brief through a family definition and into a Revit family document. You can refine the geometry and parameters through the workflow.
Are all generated family parameters fully parametric?
No. Native behavior depends on the parameter's connection to dimensions, reference planes, supported geometry and formulas. Some values are evaluated at generation time and require rebuilding the family when changed. Check the behavior you need in Revit.
Does Family Design support MEP equipment?
Connected MEP equipment is a featured Family Design workflow. Specify the required geometry and connections in the brief, and verify the generated connectors and their settings in the family document.
What should I check before using a generated family?
Check its category and placement, dimensions, geometry, materials and parameters. Flex the values that must remain editable and test relevant connectors. Review it against the same project requirements you would apply to another Revit family.
