Custom Revit tools

Describe your Revit plugin. Build it with AI.

The tool you need may be specific to one project or one way of working. BimCode turns a plain-language request into a custom Revit plugin: it plans the tool, writes the code, builds it and installs it on your ribbon.

Start with the task, inputs and expected result

Describe the work as you would to a colleague. Identify which elements the tool should act on, which values a user should choose and what a successful result looks like. Include exceptions such as linked models, pinned elements or categories that must stay outside the operation.

For example, a request to organize views becomes more useful when it includes a naming pattern, the views in scope and how to handle names that already exist. You supply the Revit workflow knowledge; BimCode writes the implementation.

From a conversation to an installed add-in

BimCode creates the plugin project and can add an interface for its settings. It compiles the plugin, receives build diagnostics and can correct errors before installing the result in your plugin library and Revit ribbon.

Compilation confirms that the code builds. The next step is to run the tool on a representative model and check the result. Tell BimCode what needs to change, then rebuild and try the revised plugin.

Keep the tool for the next time the task appears

A custom plugin gives a repeated workflow a reusable interface. Colleagues can run a defined operation without reconstructing the conversation that created it. BimCode also provides plugin libraries for individuals and organizations.

The recorded plugin-building demonstration on the overview shows a tool taking shape through the BimCode interface. Use it to see the process, then start with a focused task whose inputs and outputs you can verify.

Check the library before building

BimCode's community library includes ready-made Revit plugins. If one already matches your workflow, its page provides a starting point for installation and use. Build a custom plugin when you need different rules, a specific interface or a task that the existing tools do not cover.

Custom plugin creation requires an eligible subscription and an internet connection. A free account and access to free plugins do not include every AI or building feature. Compare the current plans before choosing how to start.

A practical first step

How to start

  1. Write a focused brief

Name the task, the elements in scope, the options you want and a sample result you can check.

  2. Build with BimCode

Let the agent create the interface and implementation, compile the tool and install the built plugin.

  3. Run, review and reuse

Try the plugin on a representative model. Refine its behavior in the conversation and keep the tool for future use.

Questions and answers

Know what to expect.

Can I create a Revit plugin without coding?
You do not have to write the source code yourself. Describe the workflow and BimCode generates and builds the plugin. You need to understand the intended Revit operation well enough to specify it and check the result.
Does BimCode run a new plugin automatically after building it?
A successful build and installation makes the plugin available to run. That does not establish that it has been tested against your model. Open the tool, try it on a suitable sample and inspect the outcome.
Can I change a plugin after it is built?
Yes. Describe the change in the plugin's conversation, have BimCode update and rebuild the implementation, then check the revised behavior in Revit.
How is this different from asking the agent to edit the model?
A direct model request is an operation in the current project. A plugin packages a workflow into a reusable tool, often with settings and a user interface, so you can run it again.
