Elements to Lines and Regions

Turns walls, floors, roofs, stairs, CAD imports and drawing lines into native Revit detail lines, model lines, room and area boundaries, property lines or filled regions, and finds duplicate lines and overlapping regions for you to review. Your original elements are never changed.

When to use it

  • Trace a consultant's CAD plan into real Revit lines or filled regions without redrawing it.
  • Turn a run of walls into room separation lines, area boundaries or a property line in one go, at the centreline, a finish face or a core face.
  • Draw the outline of floors, roofs, ramps, stairs, curtain systems and masses as detail lines, model lines or a loaded detail item.
  • Clear a view of doubled-up lines and stacked filled regions before issuing.
  • Tidy text case, line up notes and tags, and clear typed-over dimensions.

How to run it

Open a project in Revit, then launch Elements to Lines and Regions from BimCode's plugin list. The window stays open while you work: change views, select other elements and run it again without reopening it.

Every run is one Revit undo step, so Ctrl+Z puts everything back.

The screens

  1. Convert lines and CAD. Select CAD imports, detail lines, model lines or floors in Revit, click Assign selection to lock them in (or leave nothing assigned and convert whatever is selected at the time), choose what to create and click Convert. Under More options you can limit which kinds of lines are read and group the result.
  2. Convert building elements. Pick walls, floors, roofs, ramps, stairs, curtain systems or mass floors, choose where walls are drawn (centreline, exterior or interior face, core faces), choose what to create, and click Convert. More options switches floors and stairs from the outer boundary to every edge on their top faces, limits the categories that are converted, and groups the result. Model groups are read without being ungrouped.
  3. Clean up. Choose duplicate lines or overlapping filled regions. Click Check first: the list shows what would go and nothing changes. Select them in Revit highlights the candidates; Delete or Repair removes only the safe ones.
  4. Fix annotations. Change the case of selected text notes, align selected notes and tags to the first one you picked, and reset dimension text that has been typed over.
  5. Settings and help. Your setup is saved automatically. Export it as a file to share with colleagues and import theirs to match.

Good to know

  • Filled regions and property lines need a closed outline. Floor edges are closed already; a run of walls that meets itself works, a single wall does not. Open chains are skipped and listed in the results.
  • Small gaps between line ends are closed up to the join tolerance on the Clean up tab (0.1 mm by default), which also repairs the tiny endpoint errors common in CAD imports.
  • Room separation lines need a floor or ceiling plan open; area boundaries need an area plan.
  • Property lines need Revit 2027 or newer. Everything else works on Revit 2025 and 2026.
  • Clean up never trims lines that only partly overlap and never deletes filled regions that only partly overlap; those are selected for you to decide. Grouped and pinned lines are protected.
  • Assigned elements belong to the open project. After switching to another project, assign again.
