ETABS Sync

Moves the structural model between Revit and ETABS in both directions and keeps the two in step. Levels become stories, grids stay grids, columns, beams, braces, floors and walls go across with their real sizes and materials, and the engineer's design changes come back as a list you read and tick before anything in Revit changes. Nothing on either side is deleted unless you tick it, and every import is one Revit undo step.

When to use it

  • The structure is drawn in Revit and the engineer needs it in ETABS without rebuilding the frame by hand.
  • The engineer resized beams and columns in ETABS and the Revit model should catch up, without redrawing anything.
  • Somebody edited one side, and you need to know exactly what now differs: which beam moved, which section changed, what exists on one side only.
  • ETABS is on your computer and you want the model to follow your Revit edits as you make them.

How to use

  1. Open ETABS Sync from BimCode's plugin list inside Revit, with the structural project open. The Overview shows what the project holds: columns, beams, walls, floors, levels, supports and loads.
  2. Export. Leave What to send on Whole model the first time and click Read the structure. A table lists everything that would go to ETABS, with its name, story, section and material. Anything the plugin had to guess is listed as something to check.
  3. Fix guessed sizes on Mapping. Highlighted rows have an assumed size or material. Type the real ones, save, and read again.
  4. Save the file and open it in ETABS with File > Import > ETABS .e2k Text File. ETABS builds the model: stories, grids, sections, materials, members, floors, walls, supports and loads.
  5. Bring the design back. When the engineer exports the model from ETABS the same way, open Import, choose that file, read the list of changes, untick anything you disagree with, and click Apply ticked rows to Revit.

The screens

  • Overview — what the open project holds, when it was last sent and received, and whether ETABS is on this computer.
  • Export to ETABS — what to send, how the lines are found, what goes with them, the preview table, and the file.
  • Import from ETABS — the change list, what to bring in, and which families to use for new types.
  • Synchronise — compare Revit with what you last sent, what you last received, a file, or ETABS right now, and act on the differences.
  • Live link — with ETABS running on this computer: create the model directly, send changes as you work, watch both sides for edits, and write member forces back onto Revit's analytical model.
  • Mapping — what each Revit type and material becomes in ETABS.
  • Settings — naming, units, design codes, presets, and one file to take the whole setup to another computer.
  • Help — the manual inside the tool.

Good to know

  • You do not need ETABS on this computer. The file route works anywhere: send the file to the engineer, and bring theirs back. The live link is extra, and only appears active when ETABS is installed here.
  • Elements remember their ETABS names. An element that has been sent once is recognised when it comes back, so a beam whose section changed in ETABS updates the Revit type instead of arriving as a second beam.
  • Deleting is never quiet. Only Whole model can remove anything on the other side, and only the rows you tick.
  • Revit versions. Works in Revit 2025, 2026 and 2027. Creating supports when bringing a model back needs Revit 2027; on earlier versions they are listed after the import but not created.
  • Watching Revit follows one project. Live watching follows the project that was open when you started it, and stops by itself when that project closes.
  • One undo step. Ctrl+Z once puts a whole import back.
