Model In-Place to Native

Turns in-place walls, 3D CAD imports and imported shapes into real Revit Basic Walls and Floors. Each volume is read for what it is - a straight wall, an L, U or Z, a T or X junction, a closed room, a curved wall, a wall with a sloped top or a door notch, or a flat slab - and rebuilt with the wall and floor types your project already has, or new ones made to the exact thickness. Revit builds a 3D preview first, you compare it with the original and approve it, and only then is anything created. The originals are kept, and one Undo reverses the whole conversion.

When to use it

  • A model handed over with walls drawn as in-place families, so they do not schedule, tag, join or take a wall type.
  • A CAD massing or a 3D DWG import that has to become real walls and slabs before design development.
  • Imported IFC geometry that came in as shapes rather than walls and floors.
  • An L-shaped or U-shaped in-place wall that a plain "is it a wall or a slab" test would read as a 4 m thick floor.

How to use

  1. Open Model In-Place to Native from BimCode's plugin list inside Revit, with your project open.
  2. Select what to convert in Revit - in-place walls and families, 3D CAD imports or imported shapes. Or set Sources to Whole project.
  3. Click Detect geometry. Every closed volume appears on the left, already read as Wall or Floor (or Manual when neither shape fits).
  4. Check the reading. Click a volume. The 3D view marks the detected thickness in red and the height in green, with a dashed line along each wall's location line. The right panel lists every wall found - length, thickness, height - and the type each thickness will use or create.
  5. Click Build 3D preview. Revit builds the real native elements, measures them and undoes it straight away. The result shows in teal over the orange original, with a volume match percentage.
  6. Tick I approve this preview, then Create native elements. One Revit Undo reverses all of it. Open Revit 3D comparison makes a colour-coded 3D view of old and new.

Change anything after a preview and the plugin asks for a fresh one: you always approve exactly what gets built. Help in the top-right corner opens the full guide inside the plugin.

Good to know

  • The wall-height rule. Volumes at least as tall as the rule (1000 mm by default) become walls; flat pieces below it become floors; upstands and parapets below it stay low walls. Changing the number re-reads the list instantly, and any one volume can be switched to Wall or Floor by hand.
  • Types are matched, then made. A basic type of exactly the detected thickness is used (a Generic one first). If there is none, a type such as Generic - 300mm is created on approval - or, under Rules, a copy of the nearest type with its layers scaled - and reused next time.
  • The originals stay. Delete them yourself once you are happy with the result. Volumes already converted are recognised and are not converted twice; Select existing conversion in Revit finds what was made.
  • Not everything can be native. Tapered or battered sides, ledges, niches and non-rectangular openings are not reproduced by native walls - the confidence badge and the volume match tell you before you approve.
  • Limits per scan: 1,000 source elements, 500 volumes, 200,000 triangles.
